AUTO-DRIVING APPLICATIONS

Application of Radar in Automated Driving

Automotive millimeter wave radars are installed on the head, trail and/or four angles of the automobile, which have the functions of blind spot detection, lane change assist, rear collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW)

FCW is responsible for comparing the measured distance and the safety distance and judging if there could be any collision with the front vehicle or barriers. If it is less than the safety distance from the front vehicle or barriers, the system gives an alarm to warn the driver of keeping distance.

Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)

AEB is responsible for comparing the measured distance and the set safety distance. If it is less than the safety distance from the front vehicle or barriers, even though the driver doesn’t have time to brake, AEB will be initiated to brake the vehicle and avoid collision.

\

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

ACC keeps the vehicle with an appropriate safety distance from the front vehicle according to the information such as relative distance and relative speed and by vertical speed control with the accelerator and brake. Its actual applications include cruise at set speed, uniform speed following, front vehicle lane change/departure, front vehicle speed change, and stop.
